Every replacement coil has two numbers stamped on it: a resistance in ohms (Ω) and a wattage range. Both matter, and getting them wrong is the single most common cause of a burnt hit or a device that refuses to fire.
What resistance actually controls
Resistance determines how much current flows at a given voltage. Lower resistance means more current, more heat, more vapour, and faster battery drain. The industry splits roughly into two zones:
- Sub-ohm (below 1.0Ω) — typically 0.15Ω to 0.6Ω. Built for direct-lung inhale, high VG liquid, and higher wattage. Produces significantly more vapour and consumes liquid faster.
- Above 1.0Ω — typically 1.0Ω to 1.8Ω. Built for mouth-to-lung inhale, higher PG or nicotine salt liquid, and lower wattage. Tighter draw, less vapour, longer coil life.
These are not preference tiers — they are different mechanical designs. A 0.15Ω mesh coil has far more surface area and larger wicking ports than a 1.2Ω round-wire coil. Feeding a 0.15Ω coil a thick 70/30 VG liquid at 15W will not wick properly and will taste burnt. Running a 1.2Ω coil at 80W will destroy it in seconds.
Reading the wattage window
Coils are printed with a range like 60–80W or 10–15W. This is not a suggestion. It is the band where the coil's wire mass, wicking rate, and airflow were designed to balance.
Below the range: the wire does not reach vaporisation temperature evenly. You get weak flavour, a cool draw, and often liquid pooling in the chimney or leaking out of the airflow holes.
Above the range: the wire heats faster than cotton can pull liquid in. The cotton dries out mid-puff, scorches, and the coil is permanently ruined — no amount of resting or re-priming brings it back.
A practical approach: start at the low end of the printed range, take a few puffs, and step up in 5W increments until flavour peaks. Most coils have a sweet spot in the lower-middle third, not at the maximum.
Why your device may refuse to fire
Regulated devices have a resistance detection circuit and hard limits, usually 0.1Ω at the low end and around 3.0Ω at the high end. If the screen shows ATOMIZER SHORT, CHECK ATOMIZER, or OHMS TOO LOW, the cause is usually one of:
- The coil is not seated fully — thread it in until it stops, then a quarter turn more by hand.
- The 510 pin on the tank is recessed and not making contact. Some tanks have an adjustable pin.
- Liquid or condensation has worked its way into the 510 connector. Power off, dry with a cotton swab, and reseat.
- The coil is genuinely dead — internal breakage reads as an open circuit or a short.
Priming, and why it is not optional
A new coil has completely dry cotton. Firing it dry, even once, scorches it. Priming means:
- Drip liquid directly into each visible wicking port until the cotton looks saturated and darkens.
- Assemble the tank, fill it, and let it stand upright for five to ten minutes. Larger coils with thicker cotton need longer.
- Take three or four draws with the device switched off, to pull liquid through by suction.
- Start at the bottom of the wattage range for the first tank.
Sub-ohm mesh coils with dense cotton benefit from the full ten minutes. Small pod coils are usually saturated in two or three.
Expected coil life
Typical service life is one to two weeks of regular use, but the range is wide and depends on:
- Sweetener content — heavily sweetened liquids caramelise onto the wire and are the biggest single factor. Some liquids will gunk a coil in three days.
- Wattage — running near the top of the range shortens life proportionally.
- Chain vaping — back-to-back puffs do not give cotton time to re-wick.
- Dry hits — every single one causes permanent damage.
Signs it is time to replace: flavour goes flat or takes on a burnt edge, vapour production drops, the tank starts spitting, or the liquid in the tank darkens noticeably faster than usual.
