Why Your Tank Is Leaking: A Diagnostic Walkthrough

A leaking tank is usually a symptom of one of six things, and they are quick to check. Work through them in order — the list is roughly ordered by how often each is the culprit.

1. The coil is not tight, or the tank is not fully closed

Liquid escaping around the base of the tank almost always means the coil is not seated. Thread it in until it stops, then snug it by hand — firm, not forced. Overtightening compresses and deforms the O-rings, which creates a new leak path.

Check the top cap too. Most top-fill tanks have a threaded or bayonet cap that must be fully closed; a partially seated cap lets air in and liquid out.

2. Wrong liquid viscosity for the coil

Liquid that is too thin for the wicking ports floods through them. If a sub-ohm tank with large ports is filled with 50/50 liquid, it will weep out of the airflow slots regardless of how well it is assembled. Match the ratio to the coil — see our article on VG/PG ratios.

Temperature matters here too. A tank that behaves in a cool room may leak in a hot car, because liquid thins as it warms.

3. Overfilling, and the air pocket

A tank needs a small air gap to maintain the slight vacuum that holds liquid in place. Fill to the marked line, not to the brim, and avoid getting liquid down the central chimney — that tube is the airflow path, and any liquid in it goes straight to your mouth or out of the airflow holes.

4. Damaged or displaced O-rings

Disassemble the tank and inspect every rubber seal. Look for splits, flattening, or an O-ring that has rolled out of its groove during reassembly. Most tanks ship with spare seals in the box. A single flattened O-ring on the coil base is enough to cause a persistent slow leak.

While the tank is apart, rinse the parts in warm water, dry thoroughly, and reassemble. Sugar residue from sweetened liquids builds up on sealing surfaces and prevents a clean seal.

5. Draw technique and pressure

Sub-ohm tanks are designed for a long, slow, direct-lung draw. A short hard pull creates a pressure spike that pushes liquid past the coil and into the airflow path — this is what causes spitting and gurgling as well as leaking.

Chain vaping contributes: consecutive puffs do not let the cotton re-saturate evenly, and liquid pools in the chimney. Give it a few seconds between draws.

6. Storage position and altitude

Store the device upright. Left on its side for hours, liquid sits against the airflow holes and seeps through by gravity. Overnight in a bag on its side is a common cause of a leak that seems to have no explanation.

Air pressure change is a real factor too — on a flight, or driving through significant elevation change, the pressure differential pushes liquid through the coil. Empty the tank before flying, or at least close the airflow fully and carry it upright.

If none of the above resolves it

Try a different coil — a coil with a manufacturing defect in the seal will leak in an otherwise perfect tank. If a new coil in a cleaned, correctly assembled tank with appropriate liquid still leaks, the tank body itself may be damaged. Check the glass for hairline cracks and the threading for damage.

Preventing Leaks Before They Start

  1. Prime correctly: After filling a new pod or tank, let it sit for 3-5 minutes before the first draw. This ensures the coil is fully saturated.
  2. Don't overfill: Leave a small air gap at the top of the tank to allow for e-liquid expansion.
  3. Inspect seals regularly: Check silicone O-rings and seals for wear every 1-2 weeks in reusable tank systems.
  4. Store upright: Leaning devices on their side can cause e-liquid to seep out through air flow holes.
  5. Avoid temperature extremes: Heat causes e-liquid expansion; cold thickens e-liquid. Store at room temperature (18-25°C / 64-77°F).
